Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Review

Received this lens 2 days ago and took it around town and to a baseball game to try it out on my D700. Overall I am very pleased with it. The zoom range allows for great flexibility, the autofocus is fast, VR II superb as on other Nikon lenses. While the zoom is not as loose as the early 18-200mm lenses, you do need the included lock for it not to creep if you carry the lens pointed down on your camera. The weight of the lens as other reviewers say is quite comfortable - mine with clear protective filter comes in at 860g, just a touch heavier than the 70-300mm but not something you'd noticed without a scale. Build quality is very solid.
I tested this lens against my 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 VR and the 16-35mm f4 VR and overall I was pleasantly surprised how well the new lens did. Three things potential buyers should be aware of:
1) while the lens is listed as 28-300mm it seems to be neither quite 28mm (the angle of view is slightly narrower than the 16-35mm set to 28mm), nor does it quite extend to 300mm (the 70-300mm gets a bit more enlargement). This is not a big issue in normal use since you'd never know the difference without a side by side comparison, but if you're buying the lens specifically for either extreme of the range be aware of this. I don't have equipment to test so you'll have to wait for professional reviews to tell you exactly what the actual range is in mm.
2) while overall I'm very pleased with the quality - no ghosting during shots I took at the ballgame despite not having Nanocoating - when you compare side by side it is not as sharp as either of the other lenses and has, as is to be expected given the zoom range, more distortion. Again nothing that would jump out at you if you just saw a photograph, but side by side especially at 300mm you do notice that fine details (textures, text) are more crisp when taken with the 70-300mm.
3) The lens very quickly goes to f5.6 - by the time you're at 70mm you're at f5.0, and by 105mm you're at f5.3. Before buying I had wondered how this lens compares to the new 24-120mm f4, and I suspect that lens is slightly sharper and if you shoot a lot at portrait length you will fine the full extra stop (f4 vs 5.6) to be quite useful. Note I have NOT actually tested the 24-120 since it' not available yet. And of course that lens is about 25% more expensive.
Overall I'm very pleased with this lens, and despite the difference in sharpness this lens will be replacing my 70-300mm in my bag for most purposes - pretty much the only time I'd take the 70-300mm would be to specifically shoot wildlife or objects I know will be far away and I'm trying to keep the weight down (and obviously if you're really into wildlife you should get yourself a faster longer range lens than the 70-300mm).
Basically with this lens and the 16-35mm you cover an amazing range in two lenses and both of them are excellent lenses with AFS, VR II, etc.

Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D Autofocus Zoom Nikkor Lens Review

Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D Autofocus Zoom Nikkor Lens
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been an amateur photographer for almost 40 years and a devoted Nikon user for the last 30 at least. In that time I've owned every professional film SLR from the original F to the F5 and, at one time or another, almost every piece of glass from 18 to 300 mm that Nikon ever produced. Like many, I went through a period of having to have only "the best" in my camera bag and consequently paid a premium to own only "professional" primes and zooms (many of which I still own).
What constitutes a good lens however is not it's performance on test targets alone but how it performs in real life. A $1000, pro level, f2.8 zoom is useless if it's so heavy you hate taking it with you on vacation. All the money you spent on that "pro" performance is useless sitting in the bag at home.
As a real life "user", this lens is hard to beat. With a range that covers the focal lengths used for a large percentage of the pictures you will want to make, the sacrifice of 0.5 stops at the short end and 1.5 at the long is a small price to pay - unless you are in the (discouraged) habit of using slow (ISO 50) films handheld all the time. The lens covers it's long focal length range with a surprising lack of distortions - a tribute to the designers - and even has a usable "macro" feature. Is it the equavalent of my 105 f2.8 AF Micro Nikkor? NO! But the difference only shows in the corners wide open. For the occasional close up on the beach that you might want to grab on vacation it performs surprisingly well.
All lenses are compromises and this is especially true of zooms. This lens is a generally nice package as a stand alone vacation lens. Or, if you prefer, couple it with a AF20mm f2.8 Nikkor and an old AF70-210 f4 Nikkor or newer AF70-210 f4.5-5.6D Nikkor (all using 62mm filters) and you have a very versatile travel package for film shooters.
My only complaint has to do with the recent addition of a Nikon D100 to my collection of bodies. The 1.5 multiplication factor of the sensor makes this effectivly a 42-157mm zoom on that body. Consequently, for the digital shooter who "sees" wide this becomes an unattractive range. If, on the other hand, you, like me, "see" better at longer focal lengths, you now have a "normal" to medium tele zoom with a macro capability. In addition, since the digital sensor only uses the center of the lenses projected circle - this lens in digital is as sharp as my AF180 f2.8 Nikkor prime on film.
For my way of shooting these are acceptable compromises.
Addendum: July 2010
As another reader has pointed out, this review was written before the advent of the "full frame" Nikon D SLRs as well as before the arrival of lenses like the Nikon 18-200mm VR DX, 16-85mm VR DX, and 18-135mm VR DX Zooms for DX size sensors. Despite these developments (and despite the fact that I have owned many of the alternatives listed and currently still own the 18-200 VR DX on a D300s), the hundreds of superb travel photos I have taken with this lens still makes it one of the few lenses I just can't bring myself to part with. I have "blown" shots in the past for many reasons - forgot to change settings, used too slow a shutter or too wide an aperture, wrong white balance, etc. - but I have yet to have a shot spoiled by the performance of this optic. Given present technology, it is only the lack of VR that would make me hesitate from buying it again.

Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Review

Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR Lens for Nikon Digital SLR

Being a glutton for punishment, I've owned each incarnation of the 24-120. Honestly, the original was about the worst Nikon lens I've ever owned...I used to describe it as "how to turn several thousand dollars of camera gear into a $200 point and shoot". It was that bad...poor contrast, distortion, vignetting, slow focusing, etc. The only really bad Nikon lens I've ever owned. Thank goodness for eBay, and my condolences to whoever is using that lens today.
Then came the second generation 24-120. Not ready to give up the dream of having a 5x zoom for my (then) new D3, I took the plunge a second time.
The second-generation 24-120 was better than the original, but still not the sharpest tool in the shed. I'm lucky enough to own the "magic quartet" of Nikon zooms (14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 200-400) but I get lazy like everyone else and would like to have a single walk-around lens. Still, the difference in image quality was just too noticeable when I wimped out and took the 24-120 instead of the "real lenses". I'd go out with the 24-120 on my D3 and get some shots that would have been keepers with (say) the 24-70, but ended up disappointing with the 24-120. On my DX camera, I came to like the 16-85 - the same 5x zoom range as the 24-120, but with much better image quality. Except maybe in very low light, I actually got better results with the D300 and the 16-85, versus the D3 and 24-120. I tried to convince myself otherwise, but pretty soon the 24-120 was mostly sitting home gathering dust. The second-generation 24-120 eventually landed on eBay, too.
Well, I guess I never learn...still wanting that 5x zoom for my FX camera, I took the plunge and bought the latest 24-120 f/4. I guess I'm a hopeless optimist, but part of me expected to be disappointed once again. Still, instead of disappointment, so far, I'm reasonably impressed with it. Really.
In a nutshell, this is a very different lens than either of the earlier 24-120 products. It handles differently, it's constructed more ruggedly, and it's faster all the way around. The best way to describe it is to say that it's very similar to the 16-85 in terms of image quality, but scaled up for an FX body. That is to say, it's sharp, offers good contrast and color, and not so much distortion that you can't correct it in post processing.
To be clear, the long end is a bit soft wide open, but entirely acceptable at f/8 or so. I'm finding the short end very sharp at 24mm, but with some noticeable distortion (that can be easily fixed in Capture NX2 or Photoshop). Color and contrast are very good, usually giving that "pop" you get with good pro-grade lenses, and for a complex lens, there's relatively little flare. The VR system, as usual for Nikon, works unobtrusively and very effectively. And it's that much better on a DX body - most likely outperforming the 16-85 in overall image quality (and that's saying something). Though a slight step down from the best lenses, construction quality seems very good, and the lens seems to handle effortlessly on my bulky D3 as well as on my smaller D300.
Make no mistake, I'd never give up my 24-70 for one of the new 24-120 lenses. In addition to that extra stop (f/2.8 vs. f/4), the 24-70 is one of the world's best in its range...I feel comfortable stacking it up against anything, even those exotic Leica or Carl-Zeiss primes. The 24-120 is "good enough", but you marvel more at the way Nikon made all the design trade-offs, rather than feeling that you have a lens that's about no-compromise absolute top image quality. Still, the 24-120 is finally at a stage where you can carry it around on your FX camera and have no regrets.
I think Nikon finally has a keeper in the 24-120 family...at long last!

While the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens from Nikon is designed primarily for use with FX-format D-SLR cameras, it's equally at home on any DX-format D-SLR camera. As a standard 5.0x zoom on an FX-format camera body, it's perfect for landscapes, portraits, and weddings - it's an excellent choice for a perfect take-along-everywhere lens. On a DX-format camera, the focal length gets a 1.5x bump that turns it into a formidable longer-range optic with enough wide angle for all but the widest of shots.

Automatic operations work extremely well. Manual operations are also easily called into play. I am using the SB-900 with a Nikon D-90 and they are connect with absolutely no issues.
The extra items in this kit are fairly priced and saved me the trouble of ordering them separately.

If you're an amateur photographer looking for a camera to start shooting, this is your best choice.
Nikon has made this model the easiest to use. I don't use the guide mode much but if you don't know anything about SLRs you can learn a lot from this camera.
Pros:
.Rugged feeling
.Lots of shooting tips
.Retouch and review modes very useful
.Very nice photo quality overall
Cons:
.No auto-bracketing
.Custom white balance's not too easy to set up.
.No live view
Overall this is a great product. It lacks some features that as a professional might make your job easier but except for the auto bracketing that I missed, you can live with the other stuff with no problem.
