Great buy! I bought the "refurbished" D3000 and saved much over the cost of a new one. It looks and works great. I suspect that it was simply an "open box" item. Delivery was faster than expected.

Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the seasoned photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.
First time DSLR users will enjoy the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD screen. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating booklet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual mode. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.
Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked away impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and color. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some outstanding indoor photographs. The bottom line is proper settings.
A basic fix is the VR (Vibration Reduction) feature located on the lens. This should be activated, especially indoors. A tripod will certainly help. In auto mode, just set the camera to night portrait and sit back and enjoy the rest of your flight.
Outdoor shots were vibrant, sharp and rich in color without editing. The onboard flash system was more than capable in meeting fill flash requirements. Without a doubt the overall performance of the camera, features and image quality is excellent.
With 10.2 megapixels to work with, I easily blew up a personal favorite my niece had taken to 16" x 20". Even though I don't see myself trading in my Nikon D300 for this model anytime soon, this camera is by far an upgrade over any of the souped up point and shoots out there.
Its easy to see that the real jewel in this model is the auto focus system. With six auto mode settings (Landscape, Sports, Child, Closeups, Portrait, and Night Portrait) each and every photograph can be a keeper. Onboard editing tweakers won't be disappointed with this model. It covers the basics. The D3000 operates with both SD & SDHC cards.
The Nikon D3000 is paired with a Nikkor 18-55mm AF-S DX lens. It will operate with any Nikkor DX and AF-S lens. Older Nikkor or similar AF lens is a no go when shooting in auto but will function in manual mode. Since this model is not fitted with the built in optical image stabilizer, I recommend switching on the Vibration Reduction (VR) feature located on the lens. Still the best anti vibration tool is a tripod.
Nikon makes it really simple with a thumb dial for tweaking aperture and shutter speed. Metering, focus modes, and exposure compensation are easily controlled via the menu. The D3000 does not shoot in video mode. This model easily shoots over three frames per second in continuous mode. The 3D tracking sensor operates quite well in low lighting.

The Nikon D3000 camera kit comes packaged with a EN/EL3e Li-ion battery, charger, USB cable, video cable. strap, eye cap, eye cup, software CD-ROM, 18-55mm Nikkor lens, lens cap, instruction booklet and a one year Nikon warranty.
Coming out of the gate, I still find this model a little pricey for a basic DSLR. I am sure heading into the fall and holidays buyers will begin to see a noticeable price drop. Even so, the D3000 is a fine tuned replacement for the immensely popular entry level Nikon D40. Newcomers to the DSLR community will certainly enjoy this outstanding alternative.

I'm exceptionally pleased with this purchase. The D80 feels very well designed, very well thought-out, very capable without being too complicated. I was considering the D200 before the D80 was announced, but it seemed like a lot of money for a body, given that I'm just a hobby photographer. The D80 seems to be most of a D200 without the more expensive magnesium body and the weather-proofing--nice things I would love to have, but does it really make sense given my use and the $800 difference. The hardest part for me was the 3 frame per second burst rate of the D80 compared to the 5fps of the D200, but Ken Rockwell and others wrote that unless you are shooting a lot of sports, you're probably going to be happy with the 3fps and I think I am. Also, I took Ken's advice and went with this lens which is the least expensive of the kit lenses and placed my order for the impossible to get 18-200mm Nikon lens. This lens doesn't have a lot of reach but it seems amazing in quality.

I just recently purchaced the Nikon D3000 and have had a chance to use it for awhile now. It takes beautiful pictures, easy to use with the auto feature, the videos that came with it are helpful, and just cant get past how much better the pictures are than the point and shoot cameras. Still have a lot to learn about the SLR cameras, but having a lot of fun doing it.

This is a great Digital Camera. I own the Nikon D80 and wanted to get a DSLR for my wife as she has been interested in photography.
This camera is a little smaller and very easy to use. We really enjoy the on screen programing on the back of the camera. The D3000 does not come with the live view but that really does not make a difference as if you are taking real photos you want to use the viewfinder and not live view. The quality of the picture are very good and very comparable to the D80. We like the ease of use and the best part is that the lens are interchangeable so we did not have to go out and spend a $1000 on new lens. If you really want a great camera that will work for most amateur or semi pros this is a great camera. It takes great pictures, easy to use and is very fast. It size really makes it a very easy to carry around too. Battery life is incredible, over 600 shots outside. I actually find myself using it more that my D80 when I am just running around taking shots.

I'm not a pro or semipro photographer but I wanted a nice SLR camera! This one fits my demand but I'm desapointed with its display/screen. You can't see through the display/screen before shooting, only after shooting you can see the review on the screen! It's a pitty! All the rest is awesome! I have taken excellent pictures! And the kit has everything I needed.

I went back and forth between this camera and the Nikon D5000. For me, I couldn't justify the price for the video and on screen display (neither of which I ever used on my old Olympus Digital camera). This camera was very easy to use right out of the box. The manual is informative and easy to use. I only used the camera for about a week before going on an Alaskan cruise. I took close to 1200 pictures with the 4mb card and the pictures are stunning. I mostly used the 55-200 AF-S DX zoom lens and was able to photograph eagles, seal and moose at a long distance with this camera. Even though only 10MP (compared to 12 with the D5000), I was able to zoom in on the moose, seal and eagles after downloading to my Imac with great clarity. Price wise, I feel I got a great deal with this camera with the extra lens and carrying case. I think after taking a few digital photography classes, I will be quite adept at using all the features and taking stupendous photos.

Breathtaking digital SLR image quality and easy operation highlight the 10.2-megapixel D3000-Nikon's friendliest D-SLR ever. Compact and capable, the D3000 is compatible with a broad range of world-famous NIKKOR lenses and includes the versatile 3x, 18-55mm Zoom-NIKKOR with Silent-Wave Motor autofocusing and Nikon VR image stabilization to combat picture blur caused by camera shake for sharper handheld pictures. Special moments are captured faithfully at up to 3 frames-per-second and displayed on a bright, 3-inch LCD monitor. The D3000's split-second shutter response eliminates the annoyance of shutter lag. To further simplify picture-taking in special situations such as portraits, sports, landscapes, and more, the D3000 features icon-identified Scene Modes that deliver beautiful results automatically in otherwise complex situations. Additional Nikon technologies elevate picture quality and guard against picture-taking mistakes. Fast, accurate 11-point autofocus delivers razor sharpness. 3D Color Matrix Metering II and Nikon EXPEED image processing work with an exclusive Scene Recognition System for precise automatic exposures and rich, vivid color. Making the D3000 an even smarter choice are its exclusive Retouch functions for creative fun and the onboard Guide Mode that's ready to lend a reassuring hand to take the pictures you've always wanted.

Nikon D40X 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Review

Nikon D40X 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 10 Megapixel Nikon D40x is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably. In my opinion, if you are still considering whether to get a point and shoot camera or a DSLR, the D40x will be a better choice than any point and shoot camera. But if you are already deciding to get a DSLR or you want more control of the picture taking experience, then I would recommend you to also test the D50, D70s and/or D80 first before deciding to buy the D40x (or the D40). I want you to make sure that you know what you will get (and not get) with the D40x. Don't get me wrong though, the D40x is an awesome camera, and I don't think you will regret buying one. There are some limitation with the D40x which shouldn't bother most people, for example, the D40x doesn't have dedicated button to change picture quality, white balance or ISO settings (which generally only professional/enthusiast will care). Once you understand (and accept) its limitation, the D40x is a potent and exciting photography machine.
Just like all its (DSLR) siblings, the D40x powers on instantly and take pictures with almost no shutter lag which are the major advantages of a DSLR over a point and shoot camera. In addition to the P,S,A,M mode, the picture quality of the auto settings (auto, child mode, landscape etc) are also very good. With 3 frames per second you can capture movement progress in sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Also great to photograph your family or child (child mode). The D40x is a great all around camera.
Some notable new features:
1. Auto (no flash) mode. Without this mode the flash will pop-up (on all other pre-programmed mode) even when you don't want to use flash (which can be annoying). The internal flash will not pop up automatically with the P,S,A,M settings.
2. In camera editing capability such as black and white, sepia and some filter effects etc. While sounds gimmicky, these features are useful especially for those who doesn't have Adobe Photoshop (or other image editing software).
3. 10.2 Megapixel sensor for 3782 X 2592 on large image size settings. This is enough to print larger than 13 X 19 Inch.
4. 3 frames per second (vs 2.5 for D40)
To date, D40 and D40x are the smallest and lightest among all the Nikon DSLR (even smaller than the Canon Rebel XT/XTi, however the D40 and D40x is more ergonomics). I believe that choosing a camera that fits comfortably with your hands is important. Therefore, I recommend people to test the camera before buying (even if you want to buy online, please do go to a physical store and test the camera first whenever possible).
The D40/D40x has only 3 (horizontal) autofocus point (5 for D50 and 11 for D80). If you know "The Rule of Thirds", the additional AF points above and below the center focus point (available in D50 and D80) are handy to help create the horizontal third line. However, the 3 horizontal AF point in D40/D40x is still helpful to create the vertical third line. Also one can focus with the middle AF point and after the focus is lock then move the frame upwards/downwards to create the horizontal third line. Just make sure the exposure level is still accurate when you move the frame after you lock the focus.
About the 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens: A good lens producing sharp photos (though not a very fast lens). Also decent for close-up/macro photography. Lens uses internal focus technology and focusing operation is silent. A very decent kit lens.
Lens compatibility: Notice that with D40/D40x, autofocus function will not work for non AF-S/AF-I lens. If you already have non AF-S/AF-I Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you will be better off buying D50, D70s or D80. If you buy the D40, it will be convenient to stick with AF-S and AF-I type lenses. I'm not sure why Nikon choose this route for the D40/D40x (whether to enable smaller size camera or from now on Nikon will only make AF-S lens compatible camera). There are a lot of good Nikon AF-S lenses (price range added: low, medium, high) that are fully compatible with the D40/D40x such as:
- Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S (M)
- Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (M)
- Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR (L)
- Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (M)
- Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF AF-S DX (M)
- Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S (H)
- Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX (H)
- Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S (H)
- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR (H)
- Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro (M)
- And several other expensive prime tele/zoom lens like 200-400mm, 300m, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm.
High priced lens ($1000+) are usually pro level lens which usually have better construction, faster (f-stop), and produce better quality picture. However, often times, lower price lens will serve your needs just fine. I think it is important to know what you want to use the camera for before deciding which camera and lens to buy.
Image quality of the D40x is very good which is #1 factor that I look for in a digital camera.
Here are the pros and cons of the D40x in my opinion:
Pros:
1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality
2. 10.2 Megapixel sensor
3. Compact size and light weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 3 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great battery life (500+ on a single charge. 1000+ if flash is not used).
10. Auto (flash off) mode available
Cons:
1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings
2. Grip comfortably but might be a bit too small for some people
3. No top LCD and no front command dial
4. Autofocus will not work with non AF-S or non AF-I lenses (such as the 70-300m G and 50mm f/1.8D lens)
5. No AF/MF switch (have to use the switch on the lens)
6. Only 3 autofocus point
7.
8. No night landscape mode in pre-programmed settings
9. 1/200 flash sync (which is slower than D40's 1/500)
10. No depth-of-field preview button
Comparing D40x with the D40. I personally prefer the D40 over the D40x due to only minor improvement on the D40x. If you will do a lot of cropping and print larger than 13 X 19 Inch then it might make sense to get the D40x, otherwise use that $200 (price difference) to invest in SB-400 flash or better/more versatile lens (such as upgrading the kit lens to 18-70mm AF-S or 18-200mm AF-S VR or add the 55-200mm AF-S VR zoom lens). If you shoot sports or fast action (in continuous/burst mode) and need more than 3 frames per second then get the D200 with 5 FPS. For enthusiast, 2.5 FPS (D40) or 3 FPS (D40x) is good enough in my opinion.
In conclusion, the D40x is perfect for those who want high quality pictures, more control (than a point and shoot camera), and have a DSLR experience (instant power on and no shutter lag), without having to carry a bulky camera. And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing processor, faster frames per second and larger memory buffer might be needed), the D40x is pretty much all you will need.
Happy Photographing!
Sidarta Tanu

If you're an amateur photographer looking for a camera to start shooting, this is your best choice.
Nikon has made this model the easiest to use. I don't use the guide mode much but if you don't know anything about SLRs you can learn a lot from this camera.
Pros:
.Rugged feeling
.Lots of shooting tips
.Retouch and review modes very useful
.Very nice photo quality overall
Cons:
.No auto-bracketing
.Custom white balance's not too easy to set up.
.No live view
Overall this is a great product. It lacks some features that as a professional might make your job easier but except for the auto bracketing that I missed, you can live with the other stuff with no problem.

I am very HAPPY with my purchase of my NIKON D3000. It has been well worth every Penny spent on it. I am here in Iraq and I bought this Camera to get some memorable shots before I leave. It is very user friendly and takes wonderful pictures. It is perfect for new users and the seller had it in the mail and to me within a few Days. The only thing I did not get with it was a filter kit.

Not sure how much you can say here... It's a Nikon battery. I've bought off-brand batteries before and had bad luck. So, I won't do that again. Bought this one as a backup for my D5000. A backup battery, in my mind, is a must have item. I can't tell you how many times I've been taking photos and found the battery to be running low. With a backup, you just swap batteries and keep shooting. Got it fast, in good condition, free shipping and at a much better price than in store.

The Nikon D3000 is an incredible product and I would buy it again in a flash! But not from Cameta Camera. Buyers deciding between buying the parts of the bundle should be aware of exactly what the bundle contains.
The product title indicates "EN-EL9a Battery" is included. The product description indicates "All Brand New Items with all Manufacturer-supplied Accessories". The technical details say "Spare EN-EL9a High Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery Pack". "EN-EL9a" is a Nikon brand product code, and the product retails for $40+ on Amazon.com.
BUT...the actual product shipped by Cameta Camera is "ACD-273 REPLACEMENT FOR NIKON EN-EL9/EN-EL9a", an aftermarket battery valued at a small fraction of the Nikon battery.
I would never have purchased this bundle had I known it came with an aftermarket battery with far less value. In fact I reviewed the product information carefully and confirmed that it was a Nikon EN-EL9a battery before placing my order. Cameta offered a feeble refund of $3, which I rejected because it wasn't worth my time. Customer service was poor. I am regretful for ordering this bundle, as I could have gotten better value and better service by buying the Nikon D3000 elsewhere.
The camera bag is Nikon-branded and high quality. It is on the large side and more suitable for use with 2-3 lenses than with just one. I would recommend a smaller bag if you're just using one lens.
The DVDs are also Nikon-branded and they are great. These are a great way to get started and I recommend them highly. You can buy them separately here: Nikon School DVD, Fast Fun and Easy IV: Great Digital SLR Pictures - Featuring the Nikon D3000 Digital SLR Camera, Nikon School DVD - Understanding Digital Photography
The cleaning kit is just a set of low-quality plastic pieces that I am not likely to use.
